How HSBC statements are structured

HSBC statements are conservative in the best way: an account summary with opening and closing balances up front, then activity in labeled sections with dates, descriptions, and a single amount column per section, so a row's direction comes from where it sits. US retail statements print in dollars and follow the same summary-plus-sections shape as other large banks, while descriptions for international wires can run long and wrap onto a second line. HSBC also repeats the masked account number and statement period in a page header on every page; those repeated headers are detected and discarded so page breaks never become phantom rows. Our engine assigns debits and credits from the section a row falls in, merges wrapped wire descriptions, and keeps check numbers in the description when they print. Reconciliation then runs the full math: opening balance plus every extracted transaction must equal the closing balance printed in the summary. If the figures do not tie, the results page shows the exact difference rather than passing the file through quietly. HSBC savings and business statements follow the same overall structure and convert the same way.

What HSBC gives you natively

HSBC lets you download recent account activity in CSV and other common money-management formats, typically limited to recent months. Older statements are PDF-only and generally stay available online for several years.

Step by step

  1. Sign in at us.hsbc.com (or hsbc.com) and select your account.
  2. Open Statements and choose the statement period.
  3. Download the PDF statement to your computer.
  4. Upload it to ReconCSV and pick CSV, Excel, or QBO.
  5. Download the converted, reconciled file.

HSBC conversion FAQ

Does HSBC offer a CSV download?

For recent activity, yes — the download tool typically covers recent months in CSV and other common formats. Anything older is a PDF statement only. Upload that PDF here to get CSV, Excel, or QBO for any month.

I have statements from an HSBC account outside the US. Will they convert?

Generally yes — HSBC layouts in other markets share the same summary-plus-sections structure, and the parser reads layout rather than letterhead. Reconciliation is the guarantee: if anything fails to tie to the printed closing balance, we flag the difference instead of passing questionable data through.

Does it work for HSBC business accounts?

Yes. HSBC business statements use the same sectioned layout under one account header. Sign handling, wrapped-description merging, and full-statement reconciliation work the same way as on personal accounts.

How far back can I get HSBC statements?

HSBC typically keeps statements available online for several years as PDFs for most accounts. Any of those months converts here, with reconciliation run against the closing balance printed on each statement.
