How Barclays statements are structured

Barclays statements follow the classic UK clearing-bank layout: an opening or brought-forward balance up top, then a running list of transactions with date, description, and separate money-out and money-in columns, usually with a running balance printed beside each row. The two-column amounts are the feature that most often trips up naive converters. Our engine reads the two columns explicitly — a figure in the money-out column is a debit, a figure in the money-in column is a credit — and uses the printed running balance as a per-row cross-check, so a misread digit surfaces immediately instead of at the end. Long payment references that wrap onto a second line are merged back into the transaction they belong to before export. Final reconciliation runs the full math: the brought-forward balance plus every extracted transaction must equal the closing balance printed for the period. If anything is off, the results page reports the exact amount involved — nothing is adjusted silently to make the totals tie. Barclays US products share a comparable sectioned layout and convert the same way.

What Barclays gives you natively

Barclays lets you download recent transactions in CSV and other common formats from online banking, typically limited to recent activity. Older statements are available as PDFs, which Barclays keeps online for several years on most accounts.

Step by step

  1. Sign in at barclays.co.uk (or barclaysus.com for US accounts) and select your account.
  2. Open Statements and documents and choose the statement period.
  3. Download the PDF statement to your computer.
  4. Upload it to ReconCSV and choose CSV, Excel, or QBO.
  5. Review the reconciliation result and download the converted file.

Barclays conversion FAQ

My Barclays statement uses UK date order. Will the export keep it?

Yes. Barclays prints dates with the day before the month, and the export keeps the dates as they appear on the statement.

The statement has separate money out and money in columns. What does my export look like?

We read which column each amount sits in and export a single signed amount per row — money in positive, money out negative. The file imports cleanly into QuickBooks, Excel, or whatever you use.

Does Barclays offer a CSV download?

For recent activity, yes — online banking typically offers CSV and other common formats for recent transactions. Older periods are PDF statements only, which is exactly what this converter takes.

How far back can I get Barclays statements?

Barclays generally keeps statements available online for several years as PDFs for most accounts. Every one converts here, with reconciliation run against the closing balance printed on each statement.
